LI-MA Presents: Representation, Gender and the Body
LI-MA Presents: Representation, Gender and the Body, curated by Manique Hendricks
In combination with works from LI-MA’s own collection, a selection of video works questioned to what extent ideas about the body, gender and representation continue to resonate in a 21st century digital context. Who is looking at whose body and through which gaze? What does it mean to place one's body in the public space (of the internet)? How can female identifying, queer and non binary people take ownership of their bodies (online) and disrupt the binary?
Representation as a Theme in Our Collection
The LI-MA collection includes media artworks dating back to early video and performance art from the 1960’s to present day. In addition to the now defunct Netherlands Media Art Institute’s collection (NIMk), LI-MA houses the collections of other institutions including the Lijnbaan Center, MonteVideo, Time Based Arts and de Appel. In the spirit of these past institutions LI-MA has promoted the position of female identifying artists for many years. Because of this LI-MA’s collection includes many works regarding the theme of female sexuality, the body and on the position of women in art and society. After research it became clear that the stories and perspectives on the theme of body and gender of queer artists of color, for example, are not (yet) represented within this collection.
During the course of this evening LI-MA presents works from its distribution collection as well as works by Sin Wai Kin, Molly Soda and Lena Kuzmich on the theme of representation, gender and the body. Q&A with artists Lydia Schouten and Lena Kuzmich moderated by Aynouk Tan afterwards. The evening is curated by Manique Hendricks.
