Digital Care: Moniek Toebosch
Performing the Archive, Archiving the Performative
On 25 November artists and scholars will examine the archive of Moniek Toebosch, whose provocative and imaginative art works now challenge the archival conventions. How to store and mediate her work for generations to come?
LI-MA is taking care of the private archives of several world renowned performance artists, working with video and their body, playing around with and upsetting the conventions that separate artistic media and genre. How to archive this performative body of works and how to mediate it or them? Which elements of the work, her approach to art or working method do we consider necessary to be made accessible to future generations? And how can we capture these unique artistic gestures and pass them on?
These questions we ask ourselves and discuss with Maaike Bleeker Professor Humanities Department of Media and Culture Studies, University of Utrecht, Willem van Weelden, tutor and researcher at Gerrit Rietveld Academie (Dogtime), multimedia artist Wineke Gartz, composer Mayke Nas and poet/composer Samuel Vriezen.
Moniek Toebosch is well known for her site-specific installations with a complex layering of media and gestures, incorporating the body, music, texts and multiple video or slide projections. These installations make integral use of the architecture. The work relates to beauty, death, illusion and perception, making art, looking at art and being an artist.
Can the work of Moniek Toebosch be revived, and if so, how could this be done? There are different modes for an archive to facilitate an activation of the work, for instance through new performances as in re-enactments or in invitations to perform from the archive.
LI-MA researches at the intersection of media art, digital culture, and performance art archiving. Many artists work in hybrid and interdisciplinary ways. Where do performance art and media art meet? What are the differences in conservation and mediation between various disciplines and do they matter?
Previously we brought together curators, scholars, art historians, friends, critics, composers, performers and educators for exchange, knowledge sharing, and the discussion of concrete examples and real-world challenges, a common practice at LI-MA.
This event is made possible with the generous support of Podiumkunst.net. It is curated and will be moderated by dramaturge Fransien van der Putt and LI-MA director Gaby Wijers.
