In Collaborating for Sustainable Access to Digital Art: A Project Overview by Fransisca Sousa, In Studies in Conservation, 2024

The performance-based net artwork the_living (1997-1998) by artist Debra Solomon is presented at Monoscop. In 2019, the_living was included in LI-MA’s Digital Canon project as part of twenty works that had lasting influence on digital art and culture in the Netherlands, and exhibited in REBOOT in 2023 and 2024. In 2022, within the framework of the "Collaborative Infrastructure Project", LI-MA carried out the research and conservation of the_living. The preservation team received the personal archive of Debra Solomon in Fall 2022, followed by an interview with the artist in early 2023. Rather than re-enacting the work in the original set-up, the artist and the preservation team agreed that activating the work with a critical reflection of its conceptual aspects is a better way of preserving the memory and legacy of the_living. The Wiki presentation contributes to this goal of critical research and reflection on the work, with publishing as a preservation strategy.

the-living - Debra Solomon was highlighted in edition two of Archives at Risk: Seeking Shelter, by the Network for Archives and Digital Design (NADD) which highlights the uncertain future of Dutch design and digital culture archives. From 30 October 2023 until 3 March 2024 this edition was on display in the foyer of the Nieuwe Instituut, at the entrance of REBOOT (the_living was also part of this exposition 7 October 2023 - 12 May 2024). Also a video was made for Archives at Risk: Seeking Shelter – Debra Solomon

Delivery Specifications

The following forms are designed to facilitate the submission of artwork, specifically for software/computer-based art and video art, to LI-MA - Living Media Art. These forms will collect essential details about the artist and the artwork, ensuring that all necessary technical specifications and metadata are accurately documented.

Completing these forms is crucial for the effective preservation and accessibility of the artworks, as they provide vital information regarding installation requirements, functionality, and any unique considerations related to the artwork. We encourage artists and their representatives to fill out the forms with as much detail as possible, including any contextual information and agreements with the artist.
