On Thursday 2 March, West organises a talk and writing workshop in collaboration with LI-MA, in light of the exhibition ‘Part One of Many Parts: Looking at Video Art’. This night is dedicated to media art and (online) knowledge exchange. Following a presentation by artist Lauren Alexander (Foundland Collective), you will learn to write for Wikipedia and your article will be ready to go online.

Who has access to information?

In light of the exhibition and this writing workshop, Lauren Alexander will discuss the work that she creates with Ghalia Elsrakbi under the name Foundland Collective. In their work, Alexander and Elsrakbi make use of (online) archives, often with underexposed or sensitive political information. They transform this information in their videos, texts and installations and give it a new, public face. For this talk, Alexander goes deeper into what it means artistically and politically to use (public) information as a medium. After all, information production, storage and distribution are complex issues. Who really has access? How is the information used to tell a story, and by whom?

Do it yourself!

After the talk, you can try out using information yourself. This Wikipedia writing workshop is part of the project ‘Mediakunst op Wikipedia’, a series of workshops with the purpose of offering media artists more visibility. Indeed, many video works and their makers are not known to the general public. At the end of 2023, we aim to have added 500 media artists to Wikipedia. During the workshop, you choose a media artist that you find particularly interesting or inspiring, and with the guidance of Annika Hendriksen, an experienced ‘Wikipedian’, you will then work on an existing Wikipedia article or you write your own.

This event is held in English. Mostly, the Wikipedia articles are written in Dutch or English - feel free to write in another language that you feel at home in. Don’t forget to bring your own laptop!

In this first part of a series of exhibitions from West x LI-MA, a selection of five video works is shown as an ode to collaboration and relationships. West is a contemporary art institution with a changing exhibition- and event programme, housed in the former American embassy.

Part One of Many Parts: Talk en Wikipedia-schrijfworkshop

Op donderdag 2 maart organiseert West in samenwerking met LI-MA een talk en schrijfworkshop in het kader van de tentoonstelling ‘Part One of Many Parts: Looking at Video Art’. Deze avond staat volledig in het teken van mediakunst én (online) kennisdeling. Na een presentatie door kunstenaar Lauren Alexander (Foundland Collective) leer je schrijven voor Wikipedia en komt jouw artikel online.

Wie heeft toegang tot informatie?

Lauren Alexander zal in het kader van de tentoonstelling en deze schrijfworkshop vertellen over het werk dat zij samen met Ghalia Elsrakbi maakt onder de noemer Foundland Collective. Alexander en Elsrakbi maken in hun werk gebruik van (online) archieven, vaak met onderbelichte en gevoelige politieke informatie. Zij geven deze informatie een nieuw publiek gezicht in video’s, teksten en installaties. Alexander zal tijdens de talk dieper ingaan op wat het in artistieke en politieke zin betekent om (publieke) informatie als medium te gebruiken. De productie, opslag en verspreiding van informatie zijn namelijk complexe zaken. Wie heeft toegang? Welk verhaal wordt met de informatie verteld, en door wie?

Doe het zelf!

Vervolgens kan je zelf met informatie aan de slag. Deze Wikipedia-schrijfworkshop is onderdeel van Mediakunst op Wikipedia, een reizende reeks workshops met het doel om mediakunstenaars meer zichtbaarheid te geven. Veel videowerken en hun makers zijn voor bij grotere publiek niet bekend. Eind 2023 willen we 500 mediakunstenaars aan Wikipedia hebben toegevoegd. Tijdens de workshop kies je een mediakunstenaar die je inspireert; in aanwezigheid van Annika Hendriksen, een ervaren ‘Wikipediaan’, werk je vervolgens aan een bestaand Wikipedia-artikel of schrijf jij je eigen stuk.  

De voertaal van dit event is Engels. Meestal worden de Wikipedia-artikelen in het Nederlands en Engels geschreven - maar schrijven in een andere taal waar jij je thuis in voelt kan zeker ook. Vergeet niet een eigen laptop mee te nemen!

De expositie ‘Part One of Many Parts: Looking at Video Art’ is te bezoeken bij West Den Haag t/m 12.03.2023. In dit eerste deel van een reeks exposities vanuit West x LI-MA wordt een selectie van vijf videowerken getoond als een ode aan samenwerking en relaties. West is een hedendaagse kunstinstelling met een wisselend expositie- en eventprogramma, gevestigd in de voormalige Amerikaanse ambassade.
