LIMA is proud to present Mediakunst.net, an online catalogue bringing together the media art collections of Frans Hals Museum, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Van Abbemuseum, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and LIMA. These institutes joined forces and worked collectively on this project for three years. As a result, the complete media art collections of these institutes are accessible online. The media artworks hosted on Mediakunst.net are available for research, knowledge exchange, sustainable storage and presentation. The catalogue is now open for users worldwide.

Digital technologies have become an omnipresent part of our reality. They shape the way we think, talk and ultimately live our lives. It’s hard to think of something that has not been affected by digital technologies. Systematically everything touched by human existence is being digitised, by the means of production and documentation on one side, and through communication and monitoring on the other. Artists play an important role in this process.
Talking Back to the Media in 1985 combined playful interventions with a critique of the current mass media and was led by international artists such as John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger, Raul Marroquin, David Garcia, General Idea, Sebastián Lopez and Hans Haacke, to name but a few.
In opdracht van het Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed (NDE) werkprogramma Houdbaar, onderzocht LIMA in 2015 en 2016 de archivering voor cd-rom kunstwerken. Mede hiermee neemt LIMA deel aan de te ontwikkelen samenhangende en sectoroverstijgende infrastructuur voor born-digital erfgoed.
LIMA is researching new methods for the documentation, transmission and preservation of media art, digital art and performances.
UNFOLD is a new one-year research project and a collaborative, international research network that together will be examining re-interpretation as emerging practice for the preservation of media artworks.

This screening series presents all the richness of media art within THE LIMA COLLECTION. Guest curators make a selection of works that focuses on one of these recurrent questions within media art.
The LIMA collection is an amalgamation of a selection of media artworks and installations from the late sixties up to the present day. After years of selecting existing works, LIMA now asks artists to create a new work of art based on this rich historical collection. The collection as a work of art.

LIMA and the Stedelijk Museum recently presented the forum event, featuring a performance and talks, titled "Capturing a Moment: Where net art and performance meet". During this event Annet Dekker (independent curator/researcher), Gabriella Giannachi (University of Exeter), and Vivian van Saaze (Maastricht University) addressed the issues surrounding the documentation and preservation of ephemeral artworks, such as net art, performance, and live art.
As part of the project Generic Workflows Born Digital Heritage, Gaby Wijers (LIMA) and Hannah Bosma (CCDD) investigated the needs and wishes for preservation of born digital heritage, and the (im)possibilities of joining the evolving national digital infrastructure, in a research led by Robert Gillesse (Foundation DEN).
The central questions for the future presentation and conservation of any work coming into a museum collection are “What are we acquiring?” and “What do we need to preserve?”. With digital artworks, the answers to these questions prove to be complicated. The project 'Transformatie Digitale Kunst' is concerned with sustainable preservation of born-digital art.
LIMA stores, preserves and archives the media artworks from several museums, academies, individuals and corporations, and supports and advises them in the storage, digitisation and presentation of video art and digital artworks. Which collections are this, and how does this cooperation look like?
