On Tuesday the 19th of June, Van Abbemuseum, Frans Hals Museum, the Cultural Heritage Agency of The Netherlands, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and LIMA will launch the online catalogue Mediakunst.net, a digital catalogue that unites the media art collections from the participating institutions.
Mediakunst.net is a collaborative project that provides access to and visibility of media art collections. Currently, this catalogue consists of the media art collections of LIMA, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Frans Hals Museum, Van Abbemuseum and the Cultural Heritage Agency of The Netherlands. As a result, the complete media art collection of these institutions are accessible online. Since the catalogue is open for new media art collections, Mediakunst.net will be an ever-growing collection of media art in the Netherlands.
In addition to the visibility of the individual works, Mediakunst.net provides insight into the history of media art in the Netherlands and beyond and is expected to be used frequently by curators, researchers and students. The works brought together here are available worldwide for research, knowledge exchange, sustainable storage and presentation. Online visitors can now wander digitally through various media art collections that contain a selection of works ranging from media art pioneers to contemporary talent. Both international and Dutch artists are represented in this extensive collection, including Marina Abramović, Charles Atlas, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Ed Atkins, Rineke Dijkstra, Wendelien van Oldenburgh and Melanie Bonajo.
During the launch and presentation of Mediakunst.net at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam on the 19th of June, artist Julika Rudelius, art critic Sasha Bronwasser and video artist and theoretician David Garcia will discuss online visibility and the history, future and position of media art within institutions and museums. What is it like for artists, institutes and curators to have media art available online? Is it a blessing or does it detract from exclusivity for example?
